Inspiring Minds Youth Campus Visit. September 21, 2018
Duke’s ECE Diversity Committee sponsored a recent visit from Inspiring Minds, a group of 31 high school students from Warren, Ohio. ECE Associate Professor of the Practice Shani Daily and immunization compliance nurse Bree Elzy led the students through a weekend packed with opportunities to learn about science and culture at Duke. As the students arrived on Friday, they were welcomed by Director of Inclusion and Diversity Dr. Johnna Frierson before heading to a panel with the National Society of Black Engineers. After a campus tour, the students dove into their own programming projects using Scratch and Makey Makey, with help from undergraduates in Duke Women in Technology, then met with students from Alpha Pi Omega and the Native American Student Alliance to learn about Native American culture. On Saturday, the students toured the historic Stagville Plantation before kicking back with pizza and football—where Duke defeated NCCU. (Go Duke!) We hope the group’s visit inspired each and every one of these students to pursue a career in engineering.
