Gregory C Gray
Professor of Medicine
Gregory C. Gray MD, MPH, FIDSA is an infectious disease epidemiologist and Professor at Duke University with three affiliations: The Division of Infectious Diseases in Duke University’s School of Medicine, the Duke Global Health Institute, and the Duke Nicholas School of the Environment. He also serves as a Professor in the Program in Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Global Health Institute at Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore and as a Professor of Global Health at Duke Kunshan University in China.
He leads the Duke One Health Network which involves more than 30 professionals studying more than 30 pathogens under 30 research and training projects running in multiple countries: China, Iraq, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, the Philippines, the United States, and Vietnam (see Duke One Health web site at: http://sites.globalhealth.duke.edu/dukeonehealth/).
Dr. Gray received his BS degree at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; his Medical degree, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Medicine, Birmingham, Alabama; and his MPH degree from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene & Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland. He received residency training at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, District of Columbia. His medical boards are in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He is a retired U.S. Navy Captain in the Medical Corps, and a Fellow in the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Dr. Gray has conducted diverse epidemiological studies of infectious diseases for 25 years in 5 continents. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. He has authored more than 340 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. His published works have been cited by others more than 13,000 times (H-index 65 by Google Scholar).
Much of his work has involved identifying risk factors for occupational diseases, particularly for respiratory virus infections. He has studied numerous occupational groups including farmers, animal breeders, veterinarians, military personnel, turkey workers, poultry workers, horse workers, hunters, and pig workers. A strong supporter for the One Health approach, he has won multiple One Health research and training grants, helped to established centers of One Health (USA, Romania, China) and developed 4 graduate programs in One Health (PhD, MHS, and certificate).
He has served on various expert scientific committees and boards including:, FDA/CBER Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee; Member, Armed Forces Epidemiological Board; Board of Advisors, Board on the Health of Select Populations, Institute of Medicine; Member, Committee on the Initial Assessment of Readjustment Needs of Military Personnel, Veterans, and their Families, Institute of Medicine; Member, Medical Follow-up Agency Advisory Committee; Institute of Medicine; Member, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & Medicine, Committee on Enhancing Global Health Security through International Biosecurity and Health Engagement Programs; Member, Expert Advisory Panel, for the European Union’s 28-country COMPARE research consortium; Board member, International Society for Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses; Editorial Board, Journal of Clinical Virology; Editorial Board, Journal Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses; and Editorial Board, Journal Tropical Diseases, Travel Medicine and Vaccines.
He has won numerous professional awards including a US Department of Defense Legion of Merit medal for epidemiological research and a US Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service; The College of Public Health Faculty Teaching Award, Global Health Studies Program Faculty Member of the Year, College of Public Health Faculty Research Award, International Studies Faculty Mentor of the Year, and College of Public Health Distinguished Faculty Lecturer all at the University of Iowa; the Peace Medal awarded by the President of Mongolia for research and prevention of communicable diseases (The Mongolian government’s highest honor for a foreigner) and the Medal of Honor from Mongolia’s Minister of Health for health sector development (MoH’s highest award); and Duke University’s Global Health Graduate Professor of the Year.
In 2019, he was elected to membership in the prestigious US think tank, the Council on Foreign Relations.
