Overview

Brandee Newkirk is a fourth year PhD candidate at Duke University whose interests lie at the intersections of modern and contemporary art, gender and women’s studies, Black studies, and fatness. Working with Professor Jasmine Cobb, her current research focuses on art historical, images of black women within modern diet and fitness discourse. She is interested in the visual means in which weight became a preoccupation for black women as an aesthetic attribute, outside health anxieties during the early 20th century to the present.
