Leadership
Eric J. Velazquez, MD, is a Professor of Medicine with tenure at Duke University.  As section chief for Cardiovascular Imaging in the Division of Cardiology and director of the Cardiac Diagnostic Unit and Echocardiography Laboratories for Duke University Health System, he coordinates a high-volume enterprise and an outstanding group of clinician-investigators and clinical staff who make important contributions across patient care, research and educational domains.  A long-time faculty leader in the Duke Clinical Research Institute, he manages its portfolio of government-funded clinical trials.  Dr. Velazquez is a member of the Duke Global Health Institute and leads the university’s cardiovascular global health efforts.  He serves on several institutional committees and is an Associate Director of the Duke Heart Center.

Education
Dr. Velazquez received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York.  He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in clinical cardiology, clinical research and echocardiography at Duke University Medical Center.  He served as a visiting registrar at Oxford University’s John Radcliffe Hospital and joined Duke’s Department of Medicine faculty in 2001 where he was named the Joseph Greenfield Scholar in Cardiology. Dr. Velazquez is board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases and is a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians, American Society of Echocardiography and American Heart Association.  He is a globally recognized authority on heart failure, cardiovascular clinical trials and cardiac imaging.

Clinical Research
Dr. Velazquez’s research comprises the evaluation and management of heart failure, particularly with coronary artery disease, hypertension, valve and ischemic heart disease, global clinical trials and cardiovascular imaging.  He has led numerous global clinical trials including STICH, the landmark study of surgical treatment for ischemic heart failure, VALIANT, ACCOMPLISH and the Heart Failure Network.  As principal investigator, he led an NHLBI-funded Global Health Program for Chronic Cardiovascular Diseases in Eldoret, Kenya which established the first intensive cardiac care and training program in Western Kenya.  Currently he is principal investigator for the NHLBI-funded STICHES Program.  Dr. Velazquez directs the Duke Echo Lab Database, one of the world’s largest digital repositories with over 200,000 images, and leads research to expand understanding of heart disease and imaging techniques.

Scholarship
In 2014, Dr. Velazquez was inducted into the American Society of Clinical Investigation, an honor society dedicated to advancing research, translating findings into clinical practice and mentoring future generations of physician-scientists.  He has co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications, including recent manuscripts in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Circulation and European Heart Journal.  He has served as Chair of the American Society of Echocardiography Taskforce on International Echocardiography.  A dedicated mentor, Dr. Velazquez has guided numerous physician-scientists, cardiology fellows, medical students and health care professionals in building unique careers and providing outstanding patient care through clinical, academic and research excellence.
