Political Preference Formation and Partisan Divides in Postindustrial Democracies. August 28, 2008
Invited Lectures ; Herbert Kitschelt and Philipp Rehm ; The paper develops theories of political preference formation that pertain to postindustrial democracies. It distinguishes types of economic and non-economic interests and identifies actors' experiences in labor markets and in occupational life as key determinants of political preference formation. Conventional categories of "social class" and stratification have little capacity to account for within system and cross-system variance in accountability mechanisms.
