Hyperglycemic emergencies: Diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious acute complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus and, less commonly, type 2 diabetes mellitus. DKA continues to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals with diabetes, despite significant advances in the treatment of DKA. With prompt and appropriate treatment, the mortality rate between 5-20%, but this increases substantially with aging and the presence of concomitant severe illness. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
