Cultural Studies Between Heaven and Earth

Book Section

An experimental essay in moving beyond the Puritan origins of American Criticism that reads the Pagan-Catholic temptations of the Scarlet Letter (transfigurative female desire, the cuckold’s vendetta, erotics of guilt, unmediated confession) in terms of Robert Orsi’s ideas of heaven-earth mediation and in so doing, given the text’s standing as the lens through which "religion" is understood in the profession and pedagogy of American studies, initiating an Italian/Marian/Pagan understanding of and mode of relating to the canon of the U.S. novel.
