Goal-directed fluid therapy

Book Section

© Cambridge University Press 2011. High-risk surgery is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. From a database of over 4 million patients it has recently been shown that 80% of deaths occur in only 12.5% of surgical procedures [1]. In these high-risk patients the expected mortality was 5%, either due to the type of surgery, the patient comorbidities or both. Optimization of the high-risk surgical patient during the perioperative period aims to improve outcomes in this patient population.
