Photocrosslinkable hyaluronic acid for cell encapsulation

The microencapsulation of human or animal islets of Langerhans cells, which contain the insulin producing beta cells, in crosslinked polymers has been investigated for the treatment of diabetes. A modified hyaluronic acid biopolymer that possess several advantages over previous systems has been used for islet cell encapsulation. The physical and chemical properties of these photocrosslinked microcapsules have been characterized and preliminary in vitro and in vivo experiments of islet cell encapsulation have been initiated.
