The live category winners

Journal Article

The winning team in live category Virginia Tech's athletic team, Fighting Gobblers, designed and implemented a solution using accessible hardware to provide a complete 3DUI comparable to complex VR systems, to a problem of finding some objects in a supermarket and moving them to a table. The team used commodity hardware to explore the feasibility of creating a complete, general-purpose 3DUI from consumer-level devices. Six devices used to implement the interface include Wii Remote, Wii Sensor Bar, Wii MotionPlus, Nunchuk, Wii Balance, and dance mat. The task was divided into three steps based on different DOFs that users must control, horizontal translation, vertical translation, and orientation. Rapid yet precise selection was achieved through steps such as low-precision, multiple-object selection followed by refinement. The object manipulation task included steps such as selecting an item from the inventory, setting its position, and setting its orientation.
