Free radical polymerization of 2-[(N,N-dialkylamino)methyl]-1,3-butadienes
2-[(N,N-dialkylamino)methyl]-1,3-butadiene was synthesized by free radical polymerization with nickel coupling reactions. Both bulk and solution polymerizations gave materials ranging in molecular weights from 20-60×103 g/mol. The microstructures of the dimethyl and diisopropyl derivatives were quite different, giving more cis-1,4 structure with increasing bulkiness of the alkyl groups. The Diels-Alder side product was detected in the dimethyl derivatives at increasing rates as the temperature increased. Emulsion polymerization of the diisopropyl derivative indicate that increased conversion and molecular weights is possible.
