Gas permeability properties of poly[[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diyl[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethyli dene]]

PDTFE has a high free volume (0.29) and is very gas-permeable (120 Barrers for oxygen) for an aromatic, glassy polymer. PDTFE was prepared by Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling of 2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)hexafluoropropane, with the resulting high molecular weight polymer amorphous and soluble in organic solvents including tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, and acetone. The Tg is 255°C and 10% weight loss occurs at 549°and 557°C in nitrogen and air, respectively. Other permeability results are discussed.
