Free radical polymerization of 2-(2-hydroxy-2-phenylpropyl)-1,3-butadiene

2-(2-2-Hydroxy-2-phenylpropyl)-1,3-butadiene monomer (1) was prepared with the intention that it could be polymerized and/or copolymerized to form polymers with interesting physical-mechanical properties and that the further chemistry could be carried out at the alcohol to form new branched polymers with different properties than the homopolymer. In addition, the incorporation of the phenyl and the methyl groups on the same carbon as the hydroxy group eliminates the possibility of counter productive reactions, such as chain transfer, at this site. The preliminary results from the free radical polymerization of 1 are presented.
