This essay examines several factors that have stood in the way of an appropriate appreciation of the contributions of the theater of Lope de Vega and the Spanish comedia to early modern literature, factors that include political rivalries, oppositional national self-definitions, and religious differen-ces. Reference is made to an assortment of works of Lope, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and Webster.
