Effect of competition between focal firm's partners on alliance termination in alliance portfolios

We argue that competition among a firm's partners increases the hazard of termination of alliances within the focal firm's alliance portfolio, while alliance governance mechanisms, resource uniqueness, and partner strategic similarity mitigate the risk of alliance termination. We find support for the arguments in the biopharmaceutical industry.
