The biodemography of mortality aims to explain observed age patterns and time trends in mortality rates from the biological point of view. It integrates knowledge about biological factors and mechanisms affecting mortality rates with demographic information and approaches using unifying theoretical concepts, methods of mathematical modeling, and statistical analyses. The future of this research area depends on the progress in understanding factors and biological mechanisms involved in regulation of aging, and their connections to mortality. These include progress in experimental fields and advances in understanding evolutionary forces shaping the age pattern of mortality.
