Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by atypical social communication and rigid, repetitive behavior patterns, or sensory interests. In this article, we highlight several specific topical content areas in ASD, including evolving diagnostic criteria, sex differences, and neural changes underpinning response to behavioral treatment. Finally, we end with our recommendations for future progress and hopes for increased dialog among professionals, families, and stakeholders invested in ASD research and clinical practice.
