Species-specific PDGF expression in mesothelioma

Human mesotheliomas aberrantly express platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), suggesting an autocrine/paracrine role for this growth factor in the development of these tumours. Experiments to investigate the role of PDGF in the development of rat mesothelioma, revealed that although transformed rat mesothelial cells contain receptors for PDGF, these cells do not express this growth factor. The data that aberrant PDGF expression occurs in human but not rat mesothelioma suggest that altered expression of this growth factor in mesothelioma is species-specific.
