A New Type of Multifunctional Polar Binder: Toward Practical Application of High Energy Lithium Sulfur Batteries

Researchers have designed and synthesized a new type of amino functional group (AFG) binder by the polymerization of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) with polyethylenimine (PEI) polymer, which has been successfully used with a commercial sulfur powder cathode. The unique advantages of the binder design are featured with abundant amine groups and hyper-branched network structures, which provide the strong affinity to absorb polysulfide intermediates, resulting in improved cycling performance with a capacity retention of 91.3% over 600 cycles at 2C. It also shows a high sulfur-loading areal capacity up to 7.9 mAh cm -2 with stable performance.
