Development and evaluation of a device to measure walking speed

© Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018. This manuscript describes the development and testing of a device to measure walking speed. The Gaitbox is a custom, microprocessor-based device that uses an infrared distance sensor to automatically measure, calculate and display walking speed. Walking speed is a critical performance measure that has been shown to be a strong indicator of long-term health and life expectancy in older people. The Gaitbox was compared to the measures obtained by clinicians administering the timed NIH 4-m walk test and the Sprint System device.
