Optic Disc Imaging
Optic nerve imaging instruments are improving rapidly. These instruments provide reproducible, objective measurements of the optic nerve head that can assist the clinician in detecting glaucomatous damage and change. It is important that the clinician understand the specific strengths and weaknesses of each instrument so that the best-quality information will be used for glaucoma management decisions. Instruments that provide automated assessment of significant glaucomatous change are particularly useful. As illustrated in Figure 20-7, glaucomatous changes can be missed if one relies solely on whether an exam is outside normal limits. Because of the limited ability of any one test to detect glaucomatous damage and change, these techniques should be utilized in conjunction with careful clinical examination and visual function testing.
