The potential of optical tomography as a new diagnostic tool has stimulated considerable interest in the last 10 years. Although limited to about the first 5 cm of the body, the technique offers several advantages often not available in established imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, x-ray computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
