Optical activity of hexaaquo metal(II) ions in chiral crystals. III. The crystal structure and absolute configuration of laevorotatory cobalt-doped α-Zn(H2O)6SeO4
Journal Article
The crystal structure and absolute configuration of cobalt-doped α-Zn(H2O)6SeO4 has been determined by X-ray diffraction, using the method of Bijvoet pairs. The structure is isomorphous with α-Ni(H2O)6SO4. A value of R < 0 for the major crystal-field bands in Co(H2O)2+6 is found to be associated with the P43212 enantiomorph. Multiple doping reveals that the left handed structure also induces negative rotational strength in the d-d transitions of Ni(H2O)2+6 and Cu(H2O)2+6, but the opposite sign for the 5Eg ← 5T2g transition in Fe(H2O)2+6. © 1973.
