The authors describe a 15-bed psychiatry inpatient unit, the Clinical Specialty Unit (CSU), designed to treat patients with chronic pain syndromes. They argue that the use of psychiatry beds for this purpose is appropriate, given the nature of the chronic pain disorder, but is not without its liabilities. The administrative structure and roles of the multidisciplinary team are described.
