In this paper we provide empirical evidence of the effects of the U.S. antidumping law using monthly product-specific microeconomic data from the U.S. chemical industry over the 1976-88 period. We analyse import responses, highlighting the differences between allegedly dumped and non-dumped import behaviour at the various stages of an antidumping investigation. We find a wide range of behavioural responses that do not necessarily appear to be dependent upon the final outcome of the investigations and in some cases contradict the 'accepted wisdom' of the impacts these cases have upon import behaviour.
