NATURAL CONVECTION NEAR 4 degree C IN A HORIZONTAL WATER LAYER HEATED FROM BELOW.

Our objective in the present study is to document numerically the characteristics of water circulation in a horizontal layer heated from below. This geometry is a simple model of a shallow lake during the winter; it is of fundamental interest, as demonstrated by the literature devoted to the classical Benard problem where the Boussinesq approximation is applicable. Furthermore, the onset of convection in an infinite horizontal water layer with maximum density effect has been investigated based on linear stability analysis. Numerical simulations based on the complete nonlinear equations and for finite amplitude convection do not exist: to provide this information is the objective of the present report.
