A low-temperature microscope cold stage which allows frozen specimens to be etched by either vacuum desiccation or sublimation in an inert gas has been developed. The application of this device to frozen thin films of the NaCl-H2O binary system reveals that the additional information obtained by such etching is analogous to the added information obtained from normal metallurgical specimens by etching.
