Approximate closed solutions for detonation parameters in condensed explosives

Virial equation of state is used to derive solutions for detonation velocity and pressure of explosives; detonation parameters are defined by energy of detonation, loading density, average number of atoms per gaseous product molecule, weight fraction solids in detonation products, and second virial coefficient of product gases; equations for pressure and velocity are applicable to gaseous and condensed systems; product distribution rules are presented for explosives containing elements C, Cl, F, H, N, and O; when solutions are used in conjunction with these rules to predict detonation parameters of series of high explosives, predicted pressures are about 10% low and velocities are 10% high, but ordering of computed parameters agrees with experiment.
