The inverted pendulum: a mechanical analog of the quadrupole mass filter

The inverted pendulum is shown to be an analog of the quadrupole mass filter. The theory of the inverted pendulum is developed and the design criteria for a working model are presented. The working model is used to experimentally measure the β parameter from Mathieu function theory. These measurements are discussed with respect to the theory. Finally, the similarities in the operation of the quadrupole mass filter and the inverted pendulum are discussed
