Results are presented of experiments on the diffusion properties of tissue with encapsulates subcutaneous implants. The first experiment was conducted to measure the effective coefficients through capsules which formed around various substrates implanted in 3 months rats. In the second study, a sensor-independent method of quantitatively assessing in vivo transport properties of tissue including the effects of vascularity is developed. Combined, the data suggests that a classic foreign body capsule indeed retards the transport of even small molecules from plasma to an implant.
