Performance comparison between a simplified and the optimal decoder for minimising symbol error rate

The probability of error of the optimal decoder, based on the criterion of minimising bit-error rate, is calculated for a Markov source imbedded in additive Gaussian noise for several specific cases. The tradeoff between bit-error rate and complexity of a simplified decoder is presented for various signal-to-noise ratios and Markov dependency
