Search for an anisotropy between Ll x rays and γ rays in the decay of Cm243

The anisotropy of Ll x rays and γ rays of Pu239 following the decay of Cm243 has been investigated. A Ge(Li) crystal with 250 eV resolution at 5.9 keV was used to detect Ll x rays. A NaI(T1) crystal was used to detect six γ rays between 210 and 285 keV. The measured anisotropy is A=(3±6)×10-3. This is less than 2% of the maximum predicted anisotropy assuming that the magnetic substate alignment has been completely retained in the coupling of cascade γ rays and x rays.
