X-ray crystallographic studies of 2,4-dicyanopentane (PAN-2) to obtain stereochemical information having bearing on crystalline order and structure of polyacrylonitrile fibers; preparation and characterization of diastereoisomers of PAN-2 by NMR and chromatographic analysis; D and L molecules crystallize separately in space groups and crystals are characteristically twinned; shortest distances between atoms in adjacent molecules are of normal van der Waals length and no evidence of hydrogen bonding between N and CH, CH2, or CH3 groups.
