this essay examines five reviews of Durkheim's magnum opus, The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life. The work was published in 1912 and the reviews all were published in 1913. The most favorable appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, the most critical was by Van Gennep, the folklorist.
