Synthesis and Characterization of Protonated Alkylcobaloximes and Related Compounds

Five alkylaquocobaloximes have been protonated in aqueous solution to yield a series of crystalline compounds of the general formula [Co(dmgH)(dmgH)(R)(Cl)]H O where R = CH -, C H -, n-C H -, l-C H -, or C H -. Protonation can also be achieved under strictly anhydrous conditions to give the compound Co(dmgH) (dmgFH ) (CH ) (Cl). These new compounds are compared with the previously known cobaloximes of the general formula Co(dmgH)(dmgH )(X)(Y) where X = Y = CL, X = Y = SCN , X = Y = CN , or X = SCN and Y = CN . Based primarily on infrared spectroscopy, it is concluded that protonation occurs at a hydrogen-bridged oxime oxygen of the dimethylglyoxime ligand system for all the cobaloximes studied. © 1975, American Chemical Society.
