π0 production in π+p interactions at 10.5 GeV/c

Inclusive γ and π0 production is studied in π+p interactions at 10.5 GeV/c. The π0 distributions are compared to those of π+ and π- mesons. An examination of the γ-γ mass spectrum confirms the relationship σ(π0)=σ(γ)2 to an accuracy of 10%. π0 multiplicities and correlations are found to depend only weakly on charge multiplicity; for all inelastic collisions nπ0=1.50±0.05 and f200=-0.05±0.06. The π+, π0, and π- spectra are found to be similar in form when compared differentially in terms of the Feynman x variable. dσ(π0)dx is bounded by the π+ and π- cross sections for all values of x. © 1978 The American Physical Society.
