System for real-time, adaptive ultrasonic imaging

A real-time adaptive ultrasonic imaging system capable of markedly and quickly improving the quality of images degraded by aberrating media is described. The system employs one of several possible functions of regional image brightness as a quality factor. The authors have successfully demonstrated its utility in improving diffuse and pointlike test targets and in several clinical applications. A typical time to generate an improved image is 80 ms, with modifications to increase the speed of operation expected.
