The in vivo evolution of tissue response to laser beams and wound healing from argon laser retinal lesions and ultrashort pulsed laser retinal lesions were investigated by correlating the cross-sectional structure from the sequential optical coherence tomography (OCT) with histopathologic sectioning. For animal studies, single argon continuous wave or 580 nm ultrashort laser pulses were placed in the macacca mulatta retina and evaluated by cross-sectional OCT. These images were compared at selected time points with corresponding histological sections. OCT was able to detect the acute tissue injury from laser delivery and the evolution of healing response over eight days after laser delivery.
