This paper reports the recent developments in luminescence analysis of atmospheric samples by using two simple luminescence methods, the synchronous excitation and the room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) techniques. Samples extracted from high-volume samplers can be analyzed for their content of certain polynuclear aromatic (PNA) compounds using these two spectroscopic methods. The RTP technique also provides a novel approach for direct detection of PNA vapors collected on filter paper.
