Imaging the microstructure of menisci using optical coherence tomography

The ability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess the meniscus in healthy and artificially created diseased states was investigated. The meniscus was composed of highly organized I collagen in a circumferential along the peripheral margin with more fibers arranged radially towards the central margin. The polarization sensitivity of the meniscus was dependent upon the area imaged. The differences in OCT polarization sensitivity was found to be consistent with the different arrangement of collagen fibers throughout the meniscus.
