Improvements in operative techniques and perioperative care have reduced the morbidity and mortality associated with aortic reconstruction, which is still the gold-standard treatment for aneurysmal and occlusion disease of the aorta. However, the development of renal dysfunction and failure remains a significant source of perioperative morbidity and mortality. The incidence, etiology, and pathophysiology of renal dysfunction following vascular surgery are explored and the results of renal protection strategies are presented.
