Some of the significant factors associated with software innovation and the globalization of the industry are discussed. Researchers are investigating the way a software will be developed and introduced in the market. It is expected that software can be developed and sold as standalone products, or as a service, which is developed by a user or a company. It is also expected that software may be developed and patented, before being introduced in the market. It has been observed the number of software patents significantly increased in the US 2007. Software patents in the US have grown at an annual rate of 32.6%, as compared with 34% in other parts of the world. It has also been observed software development activities are growing significantly in developing countries, such as India. Significant growth of emerging economies has contributed to global software innovation. The growth of these economies is leading to an increase in the number of users and local innovation.
