Patients with venous thromboembolism are routinely treated with anticoagulants to minimize the risk of recurrent events: owever, a consensus has not been reached concerning the optimal duration of therapy. The available evidence does suggest that patients can be stratified into low-, intermediate-, and high-risk (for recurrent venous thromboembolism and hemorrhage) groups, allowing management to be individualized. © 1997 Lippincott-Raven Publishers, Philadelphia.
