Towards a framework for a decision support system for integrated information retrieval in biomedical computing

Information retrieval in a medical/health care environment is complex. Various frameworks have been developed such as the standard DBMS (database management system), the extended DBMS and the integrated DBMS approaches, which are essentially integrated IR-DB (information retrieval-database) models. These models do not fit into the paradigm of AI-data models (artificial intelligence) which have evolved as a result of the increasing use of expert systems. Incorporation of mathematical and simulation models which are common place in a biomedical computing environment necessitates an approach which can incorporate IR-DB-AI data types. We present a DSS (decision support system) framework as they relate to our AIDS research applications.
