Role of photovoltaics in urban heat island mitigation

Journal Article

Research was carried out during 2003-2004 to evaluate the potential of mitigating the urban heat island hysteresis lag complexity in the grater Phoenix, Arizona region. A Photovoltaic mitigation strategy was developed in comparison to traditional urban forestry and cool pavement technologies. Incorporation of the PV for the mitigation provided new insights into the urban energy balance in regards to sky view factor and thermal convection and conduction. The resultant findings indicates that PV can be a particulary viable mitigation alternative especially for arid regions where the water balance quesitons are of significance.
