IAIMS - The role of strategic planning
In 1986, the Medical Center Information Systems Advisory Committee (MCISAC) was established as a standing committee of the Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) with responsibility for ongoing information policy formation and strategic planning. MCISAC's planning efforts have culminated in the preparation of a 1989 strategic plan which will serve as the foundation of the DUMC proposal for full-scale IAIMS (integrated academic information management system) implementation. A description is given of the structure of MCISAC. The strategic planning process and the goals and objectives included in the 1989 DUMC IAIMS strategic plan are presented. An example of the DUMC strategy for achieving the IAIMS goals and an assessment of the impact of the strategic planning process are given.
