The authors present the development of a computerized medical information system and discuss the factors which influenced its philosophy, design and implementation. This system, now called TMR, began as a single-user, tape-orientted minicomputer package and now exists as a multiuser, multidatabase, multicomputer system capable of supporting a full range of users in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Current projects are emphasized including networking and the integration of inpatient and outpatient functions into a single system.
