Local area networks and distributed systems provide major advantages in flexibility, expansion, reliability, and improved response time. The authors present their experiences in developing and implementing Ethernet using digital hardware and DECnet networking software. A laboratory system implementation using two microcomputers and a superminicomputer is discussed in detail.
