Endoscopic optical coherence tomography: Clinical applications and functional extensions

An optical coherence tomography (OCT) system for gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy was developed. The system capable of imaging in real time used a small-diameter rotary-scanning probe compatible with standard GI endoscopes. The method was used to visualize morphological layers and microscopic strutcures in all endoscopically accessible GI organs. Endoscopic OCT was objectively compared with commercial endoscopic ultrasound to demonstrate the capabilities of the technology.
