The design, fabrication, and characterization of optical signal distribution in a planar lightwave format using 1 by 4 multimode interference (MMI) were discussed. The MMI coupler used in the method was fabricated using a photosensitive polymer using spin coating and lithography. A standard single mode optical fiber was used to couple in the optical beam at a wavelength of 1300nm. Analysis shows that coupler exhibited high performance in both splitting loss and balanced output.
